In the midst of our digitally hyper-active world, where facts flash before our eyes in seconds, there is a slower, quieter motion gathering speed—quite literally. Indoor gardening is becoming more of a hobby than ever before; it is therapeutic, sustainable, and works of art covered in leaves and earth.
The pandemic years brought with them a planting craze, but the trend hasn't died out yet. Millennials and Gen Zers in particular have embraced the "plant parent" lifestyle. Greenery is reclaiming indoor space with pothos spilling off of bookshelves and succulents perched on windowsills.
In addition to looks, house plants purify air, improve mood and reduce stress. NASA’s Clean Air Study famously recognized the peace lily and the snake plant as removing toxins from the air. Beyond that, however, caring for a living being in this often isolating era connects one to the earth.
What's so appealing is that this trend is so attainable. No yard is needed—only a bit of sun, water, and TLC. Because of plant care apps and online communities, even the beginner can create a lush, thriving indoor jungle.
During a time of overstimulation, the quiet that is required in caring for something patiently becomes radical.
